Olive tree and Olive oil is considered something that has a great value. The people from the ancient time used the product from the Olive, its fruit, its Oil, Its leaves, and also Its wood. we use is oil as the raw material for cosmetics and medicine. We use the oil also for soap, and to be used for hair. We also used the oil for cooking.
in ancient time, people used the oil for lighting, and in ancient Olympic it was used for the Olympic flames. And the victor from the games is crowned with its Leaves. as a symbol of abundance, glory, and peace.
beside these usefulness from ancient times. there's also a legend about the olive.
in ancient Greek, it was said that the god Zeus wanted to give the Peninsula of Attica to God or Goddess that could give him a valuable Present, thus He made a competition. And then Appeared two gods The Goddess Athena, goddess of Wisdom and the God Posseidon, the god of the sea, thus the two Gods compete each other to bring valuable present for Zeus. the God Posseidon brandish hi trident on a rock (said it was a sacred rock) and came horse from the rock, the horse was a warhorse able to carry men to battle and draw chariots. While the Goddess Athena Struck Her Sper into the ground, and the spear turned into an Olive Tree. in the end The Goddess Athena won the competition, since her present is considered the valuable present for mankind.
it was not stop there it was said because of the defeat Poseidon became frustrated and leaved Attica without water and this made the people angry at him. moreover Poseidon's son also angry because of his father defeat and decided to cut down the Olive tree with an axe. in the moment that he raised the axe it just happened that the axe was turned against him miraculously and killed Him.
because of Her winning Athena became the protector of Attica and a city with her name.
in the bible it is said in the account of Noah when The Lord punished the whole earth with water that Noah's ark rested in mount Ararat. but to make sure that the Earth was already dried he decided to release dove, but it returned soon, then He released Raven but it did not Return, and lastly He released dove, and the Dove returned with Fresh Olive leaves in its mouth, in seeing this he know that the earth was already dry. and He opened the ark and all his family and the animals inside the earth came out of the ark.
The Romans gave the title to Olive as the prima omnium arborum, meaning the first of all tree. surely from the stories above we can know how how precious and valuable is the olive.

The Oil (Oleum)
In this past few months I began to question about the true meaning of the word “Oil”. This word makes me wonder about its connection to another word “Olive”. The two words may have their own meaning. The first is a liquid substance, while the other one is a tree.
If we combine the two words it will create a phrase “Olive Oil” a liquid substance from olive tree. Most people know about Olive oil. We use it for almost every kind of purpose, like cooking, material for medicine and cosmetics, and also for lightning. We also know a fictional character named Olive Oyl.
But, what makes me think about the connection between the two words is, that the two words seem identical. It makes me think that the two words actually have the same meaning.
My first hypothesis came when I learned that Oil is not a word of English Origin, since it closes to another word, “Oleum” which is Latin. Then I learned also that “Oleum” is the Latin word for “oil”. While the Latin word for Olive is “Olive”. I compare the two word Olive and Oleum. They’re almost identical.
Then I began searching about he origin of he word “Oil”. And this is what I get. The word Oil is from the Old French word “Oile”, and from the latin “Oleum”. Both words are actually from the Greek word "ἔλαιον" (elaion), "olive oil, oil" and that is from the Word “ἐλαία" (elaia), "olive tree".
This answers my question. And it makes me clear about the word. The result is of course support my hypothesis.
Now we use the word to refer to all types of Oil, example petroleum, oil from palm tree, oil from other tree than Olive. But now I discovered that the word oil itself was originated from the word olive. And maybe it can also mean that oil was actually a product from Olive tree.

Welcome To Vinum et Oleum
this is my blog the title is Vinum et Oleum. Do not worry if you do not know the meaning of Vinum et Oleum. I will tell you the meaning of it. in this post.
Vinum et Oleum is actually taken from the bible. it is the latin word for Wine and Oil. the phrase is mentioned in Revelation Chapter 6 Verse 6, where it is said:
"And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine."
that is the English translation. and for the Latin Vulgate it translated:
et audivi tamquam vocem in medio quattuor animalium dicentem bilibris tritici denario et tres bilibres hordei denario et vinum et oleum ne laeseris
this is where i get the phrase vinum et oleum.
i had a vision about this phrase, just like the verse said it is meant, commanded, destined, not to be harmed.
thanks and see you in other posts. Be blessed.
